Is Turkey greener and more luscious than England?
England has always been known as "this green and pleasant land", but global warming and poor control of water reserves has led to a boom bust effect on our countryside. One season we see dramatic flooding that kills vegetation and wildlife and the next we see long periods without rain leading to hosepipe bans. In comparison visit somewhere like Cavus Bay in Southern Turkey and you will see well controlled irrigation and best use of the natural water source that encourages year round vegetation, making the area one of the most fertile in the world.
So why is Cavus Bay so green?
Cavus Bay, found on Google Earth under the local name of Adrasan, enjoys the benefit of several natural springs that supply the whole area with year-round water. One of the natural water springs feeds the Albos Hotel in the centre of the bay with fresh water and the beautiful and luscious garden there is testament to this.
Look up from Cavus Bay and you will see the Tahiti mountain. During most winters the mountain receives a plentiful covering of snow (see the weather in Turkey). It is this snow and the reasonable winter rainfall which keeps the water table topped up and those springs flowing all year.
Wasting water
The high profile reports in the news recently of leakage from our water pipes also illustrates how much better the Turks are at managing their water. Look around Cavus Bay and you will find no water leaks, the water is too important to them to waste it.
So England is not just the only green and pleasant land. Cavus Bay in Turkey could show us a thing or two about managing water.
